BaZi Five Elements Calculator: Distribution and Context

An element’s share and its role in your chart are different questions. Calculate your Four Pillars, then compare the distribution with the reasoning behind it.

What your calculation includes

  • Your calculated Four Pillars and Day Master, rather than a fixed sample chart.
  • Visible-stem counts, hidden-stem weights, totals and percentages for all five elements.
  • Season, roots, support and useful-element context to distinguish composition from interpretation.

Enter birth time in UTC+8. Convert overseas times and historical daylight saving first; see the rules above.

Time and calculation rules on this page

Clock time is treated as UTC+8 with a 120°E reference meridian, then corrected for birth longitude and the equation of time. The day pillar changes at corrected midnight; the month pillar follows solar-term boundaries. For births elsewhere, first convert the time to UTC+8 and correct historical daylight saving. This page does not detect overseas time zones or daylight saving automatically.

Check true solar time and time zones

Basic calculation is free. Saving needs an account. AI readings and questions use account credits; the credits page shows current prices and your balance.

Your name is optional. To continue after sign-in, birth inputs are temporarily kept in this browser tab for up to 30 minutes and can be cleared at any time. Guest charts are not saved to an account or published. Birth details never appear in the URL.

East and north are positive; west and south are negative. Manual coordinates replace the place selection above. Coordinates do not detect the time zone.

How is the distribution calculated?

Each of the four visible Heavenly Stems contributes 1. Each branch’s primary hidden stem contributes 0.5, and each remaining hidden stem contributes 0.3. Contributions are grouped by element and converted to percentages. Hidden-stem values and totals are weights, not a simple count of the eight characters. Rounding may put the percentage sum slightly above or below 100%.

A missing element is not automatically a useful element

Distribution describes composition under this weighting model. It does not independently establish strength or a useful element. Traditional assessment also considers the season, the Day Master’s roots and support, interactions, and heat, cold, dryness and moisture. A low share does not automatically call for more of that element, and a high share is not automatically harmful.

How to check your result

Check the calendar type, leap month, birth time, location and time zone before reviewing the calculated pillars. Read the distribution table alongside Day Master strength and useful-element reasoning. Near a solar-term or midnight boundary, time conversion and day-boundary conventions can change the chart, so verify those first.

A transparent weighting example

Teaching arithmetic only: one Jia stem and one Yin branch, not a complete birth chart. Use the same weights as the calculator.

Total1.50.30.3

Total weight is 2.1: Wood 71.4%, Fire 14.3%, Earth 14.3%, Metal and Water 0%. These are arithmetic proportions of this fragment, not strength, useful-element or missing-element remedies.

Questions before you read

Should all five percentages be equal?

No. A 20% share is merely an even mathematical split, not a measure of health, happiness or chart quality. Traditional interpretation considers structure and season rather than requiring equal shares.

Can a missing element determine a name or accessory?

Distribution alone cannot justify that choice. This page explains a traditional interpretive model; it does not establish that a name, color or accessory changes real-world outcomes or replace your own judgment.

Results describe a traditional interpretive system, not scientifically validated predictions. If the birth time is uncertain, compare adjacent birth hours and avoid treating one label as a fixed conclusion.
